What Is Anal Fistula?
The anal fistula is a small opening that connects an abscess, a guest post or an infected space in
the anus to an opening in the skin around the anus. The anus is the external opening of the body.
Inside the ant are several small glands that produce mucus. , this gland becomes clogged and
causes infection in the anus area. This leads to the formation of an abscess and a fistula.
Causes of Anal Fistula:
The main cause of anal fistula is a congested anal gland leading to an anal abscess. Although this is a
specific cause, other factors can cause anal fistula:
Trauma
Radiation therapy is used to treat cancer
Cohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease
This is delicate
Cancer
Diverticulitis is the formation of small pouches in the large intestine
STDs- transmitted diseases
Anal Fistula Symptoms
Common symptoms of anal fistula include-
Pain and swelling around the anus
Often anal abscess
Change in smell or blood around the anus.
Irritation of the skin around the anus to reduce pain
Don't bleed
Pain with bowel movements
Chills, fever, and feeling tired
If you experience any of the above symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Diagnosis and treatment of anal fistula:
An anal fistula is usually diagnosed by examining the anus and the area around it. They then try
to determine the depth and direction of the channel. Most of the time, the drain comes from the
outside door. Some fistulas leave no visible scar on the skin. In such cases, the doctor may
perform more tests to investigate the problem in depth.
Such procedures may include:
An ultrasound or MRI of the anus to better visualize the fistula channel
Endoscopy involves inserting a special instrument either or through the anus.
Sometimes, your surgeon will see you in the operating room under anesthesia to diagnose the
fistula. Most fistulas are treated with medication alone. If not, or if necessary, surgery is
performed. This is a minor operation and can be done at a local clinic. No need to visit the
hospital. When a fistula is found, your doctor will do some more tests to rule out any major
damage. It can also be used to screen for Cohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease.
According to a WebMD study, about 30% of people with Cohn’s disease develop fistulas. In some
cases, a colonoscopy is performed to further investigate internal lesions.
During a colonoscopy, an instrument like a light tube is inserted into the colon through the anus.
This procedure is performed under conscious sedation, which is light anesthesia. Most fistulas
respond well to medication and surgery. Your surgeon may recommend soaking the affected area
in a warm bath, also known as a Sits Bath. This is to soften the soles of the feet. Some stool
softeners and laxatives are also recommended for a week after surgery.
Since some pain occurs after surgery, the doctor injects an anesthetic such as
lidocaine to ease the discomfort. It can also give you short-term pain relief. Treatment is
withheld until the fistula is treated and the pain subsides. Depending on the location of the
fistula, the doctor may approach cutting the sphincter muscle responsible for opening and
closing the anus. They try not to damage the intestine, but it is hard work, and bowel control
becomes difficult after the procedure. But, with proper treatment and care, it can be controlled.
