Gallbladder stones: causes, symptoms, and treatment
The bladder is located on the right side of the abdomen, below the liver. The main
function of the bladder is to store concentrated bile produced by the liver. Gallstones
are formed in the bladder and are fragments of stones/hard material.
Stones form
when pigment and cholesterol mix in the bladder - causing blockage and pain in the
bladder. Stones and polyps are produced when the bladder wall becomes infected.
Bladder causes:
Cholesterol is the main cause of kidney stones! About 85% of bladder cholesterol is
caused by fat accumulation, according to the National Health Service. Another reason
is the accumulation of calcium salts in the bladder.
Cholesterol in bile:
Too much cholesterol in bile can lead to gallstones. The function of the bladder is to
dissolve stones. However, if your liver accumulates fat, it causes cholesterol, and since
bile cannot dissolve it, it causes stone formation.
Bilirubin in the gallbladder:
Bilirubin is produced in your body when the liver destroys old red blood cells. In
some cases, such as liver damage or certain blood disorders, the liver produces
bilirubin. So overloading the gallbladder with minerals. Pigment stones form when
the bladder is unable to break down excess bilirubin. So it forms a black or dark
brownstone.
Concentrated bile that induces a full bladder:
It empties the gallbladder to keep the gallbladder healthy. However, if it fails, bile
accumulates and causes stones to form.
Bladder stones:
Symptoms
Bladder pain is usually in the upper right abdomen. The pain is triggered by eating
fatty foods such as butter or fried foods. The pain lasts for several hours. Limestone
often does not show any major symptoms. But if it is blocked in the channel, it can be
blocked. In such cases, you may experience the following or more symptoms:
Sometimes a sharp pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
Rush
Black urine
Do not have diarrhea
Indigestion/acidity
Worried
Vomit
The asymptomatic bladder has no pain other than the listed symptoms, but sometimes
pain occurs when the bladder obstructs the movement of the bladder.
Long-term bladder risks:
If any of the above symptoms persist for more than 2 hours, gallstones are blocking
the ducts causing infection and swelling. This condition is called acute cholecystitis.
Although the probability of such an event is only 1-3%, it is recommended not to
prolong it and visit a doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms include:
Don't have a fever
Job loss
Refrigeration
Severe pain in the upper abdomen
Confusion and vomiting
Bladder stone diagnosis:
There are several ways to find and diagnose gallstones. However, at Redhead, we
provide quality care that is easy on the patient's pocket, guided by experts and using
the latest technology. We perform the following steps for diagnosis:
Physical examination
A physical exam can help detect early symptoms of gallstones. This includes -
checking the color of the eyes and skin, as a yellow color can indicate a sign of
jaundice.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound helps in imaging gallstones and abnormal conditions. Also, if there are any
other complications.
Examination of the abdominal cavity
An imaging test is used to diagnose liver and abdominal abnormalities.
Radionuclide bladder scan
An accurate test to diagnose gallstones. Radioactive substances are injected into the
patient's veins, which pass through the bloodstream from the bladder and liver. It can
accurately detect the presence of cysts or infections in the bile duct.
Blood test
A blood test is done to measure the amount of bilirubin in your blood. It also checks
how your liver is working, as well as determines the level of toxins in your blood.
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
Bladder problems are mainly channel related. Endoscopic retrograde
cholangiopancreatography uses a camera and X-rays to examine
problems with the gallbladder and pancreas.
